THE Port Douglas State School has announced its Student Representative Council (SRC) for the coming year.

The committee - made up of 21 student leaders - aims to develop leadership skills and to support both the school and wider community as a whole.

All students selected for the committee demonstrate the Port Douglas School’s key values of ‘being safe, respectful and being a learner.’

“Leadership to me involves being friendly to your peers and making their time at school better,” said school vice captain August Gaske.

“I would like to provide choices at lunchtimes for students and help raise money for the school and community.”

The SRC is made up of four school captains, eight sports captains and nine reef guardians. There responsibilities include active involvement in school activities and encouraging fellow students in their schooling pursuits.

School captain Brianna Ingram said they hoped to raise needed funds for vital community organisations.

“I would like to raise money for new toys for the Mossman Hospital waiting room” she said.

Her fellow captain, Corey Bickford, also had some interesting ideas.

“I want to build a pond to collect rain water, and put fish in it," he said.

"So when you empty the pond the nutrients will go into the garden to help plants grow."

Reef Guardians: Caylen Bhimji, Sofia Cullen, Sophia Cruz, Lily Hunt, Alyssa Jackson, Toby Jansen, Sophie Jeffrey, Lio Pongthai, Leena Ranford.
