Uber ramps up Far North push
EXPANDING
EVER wanted a job working for Uber?
The company appears hellbent on moving to Far North Queensland and will hold information session for prospective drivers in Cairns this week.
Despite still not being operational in Cairns or Port Douglas due to a number of legal requirements, the international ride-sharing phenomenon is inviting potential employees to attend the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino this Thursday for a series of meetings.
“Uber is not yet operational in Cairns, However, we are hoping to launch in the near future,” said an email from Uber today.
“To help you get prepared we are holding community information sessions this week. These sessions will introduce you to the Uber Team, explain how driving with Uber works and answer any questions you may have.”
Uber has been advertising for drivers in the Cairns region on its website despite strong opposition from several political parties.
They’ve been urging interested drivers to email local politicians to oppose any plans to ban the service in the Far North.
"I don’t support any moves to take Queensland backwards and reverse the reforms that have opened up choice and competition," the pre-written email from Uber says directed at local MPs.
"I don’t want ridesharing banned. I want it introduced.”
Katter’s Australian Party and One Nation have been especially vocal in their desire to resist Uber’s expansion to north Queensland.
