AFL Cairns: Crocs look to consolidate before bye rounds

Published Friday 1 July 2016

PORT Douglas will look to enter the bye rounds by consolidating its position at the top of the AFL Cairns leader when it travels to Cairns City Lions tomorrow.

The Crocs have a regular bye next weekend which is followed by a a rest for all clubs due to the North Queensland representative match against South Queensland at Cazaly’s Stadium.

Seven Port Douglas players are in the initial squad and a handful are almost certain to line up in the AFL curtain raiser to the Western Bulldogs and Gold Coast SUNS clash.

The Lions are trying to stay in finals contention and will be desperate to show some fight against the white-hot Crocs, who are gunning for their 10th straight win.

They fought gallantly against Port Douglas when they met in round six, but were eventually outclassed by 43-points with Hayden Graham playing his best game of the year and Jonathan Hobbs and Jesse Mawson were influential.

Despite their dominance this year the Crocs are only percentage clear of the second placed South Cairns Cutters, although they have a four-game buffer on the third placed Cairns Saints so their position in the top two looks secure.
