BREAKING: THE Port Douglas stinger nets will be removed this afternoon.

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) said daily drags had failed to find any of the deadly box jellyfish in the past three weeks and the Four Mile Beach nets would be reeled in today.

“Lifeguards have continued to perform regular drags in and around the stinger nets with drags for the past three weeks being clear,” SLSQ  North Queensland Manager Col Sparkes said.

“Having said that, it’s important to remember that potentially dangerous marine stingers can be found in northern waters all-year-round and it’s vital that all swimmers continue to take precautions to protect themselves.

“We strongly encourage all beachgoers to only swim at patrolled locations, between the red and yellow flags, as that’s where they’ll be able to seek help and advice from surf lifesavers and lifeguards.”

As reported on Newsport last week, the news is a relief to organisers of the Coral Coast Triathlon to be staged in Port Douglas on Sunday.

The removal of the nets across the Far North Queensland coastline typically signifies the end of the high-risk stinger season. There were 27 irukandki stings reported this season.
