Port Douglas turns green for St Patrick's Day
Published Thursday 17 March 2016
PORT Douglas will join the millions around the world in celebrating St Patrick’s day today.
It's a day when anyone with a hint of Irish blood - and probably more that don't - turn pubs and restaurants into a fun haze of green, leprechaun imitating revelry.
"Back home everyone has the day off for St Patrick's Day so the fact people have to make an effort here in Australia makes it a bit more special," Liam Hudson, manager of Paddy's Irish Bar in Port Douglas, said.
"It's a very nostalgic day and is always a good time."
Cafe Fresq, on the corner of Macrossan and Grant Street, has also turned green with St Patrick's Day breakfast specials up to 2pm. On the menu is a full or mini Irish breakfast with a mug of 'Barry's famous tea, along with other specials throughout the day.
"We always celebrate with gusto and we have a lot of fun," Cafe Fresq manager Aoife Conway said.
"People need to get the foundation down before they start hitting the pints of Guinness and the festivities begin."
Popular local band The Kroovs will get the party started at Paddy's Irish Bar - on Macrossan Street - with a live set from 4pm, while drinks and food specials will be available throughout the night.
