For people in parts of the Northern Tropical Coast and Tablelands, a heavy rainfall weather warning has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology as a top priority.

The BOM synoptic situation states that ex-tropical cyclone Winston is currently just of the North Tropical Coast, approximately 150km east of Cairns.  It is expected to move slowly westwards towards the coast during today and to move inland during Friday.

Areas of heavy rain, which may lead to flash flooding, are expected to develop over the warning area this afternoon and evening, and continue into Friday. This will mostly be about the coast to ranges between Cairns and Townsville, and extending inland during Friday. Six hour rainfall accumulations in the 150 to 200 mm range are possible, with some 24 hour totals in excess of 300mm likely.

Locations which may be affected include Cairns, Ingham, Innisfail, Mareeba, Cardwell and Atherton.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

• Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters.
• If it's flooded, forget it.
• Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
• For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 4:55 pm.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 219. The Bureau and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Douglas Shire Councils community disaster and emergency flood information advises that before any flood listen to your radio. Heed all warnings and advice. If a flood comes collect your emergency evacuation kit and listen to the radio for official advice. Anchor down anything which might float away. Switch off electricity and gas if you must leave home and avoid entering flood waters on foot or in a vehicle.
