Just when you thought you could escape your boss after boarding a flight, along comes 24/7 Wi-Fi.

This follows Qantas’ announcement that it will begin a trial of a free Wi-Fi network on its domestic flights offering download speeds of between 12 mbps and 25 mbps, claiming it will be fast enough to stream movies, live sports and television shows.

For the frequent traveller, this means “never logging off”. Some will hate the idea and curse another technological advancement. Others will endorse it.“It’s the sign of the times,” says Robert Cruz, General Manager of the Reef Marina.

“Being connected is a necessity. This is what the market is demanding and Qantas is following what other airlines have done.”

Steve Molnar, General Manager of the Sheraton Mirage said this is a great idea.

“The more this happens; it will make for seamless travel. I wholly endorse it,” he said.

Generally, this move has been applauded, a sign that Qantas is getting with the times and listening to what passengers want. And sure, it will be great for those on a deadline who believe they can use the time in the skies productively. Or want to access their own entertainment options.
