Garbage carnage on main street

Published Friday 4 December 2015

Thursday morning 3 December the owners of Ahoy / Sparrow Coffee were confronted by garbage carnage with around 20 wheelie bins strewn across Macrossan Street.

The perpetrators left a trail of destruction at the site then continued their rampage that included full garbage bags of coffee waste spilled all over the roads infront of the Court House Hotel and Pebble Gift shop on Wharf Street.

Local resident and Newsport contributor Nick Malachi was on the scene after the event took place early Thursday morning as Council clean up teams were left to rectify the carnage.

Newsport contacted Council and local police for further comment.  Council advised the bins were knocked over by person/s unknown and staff from the Port Douglas Depot cleaned it up as part of their normal street-cleaning routine. The cause of the incident is unknown.  Port Douglas Police advised that no incident had been logged with police concerning the matter.

We will follow up about what measures can be taken to protect businesses and the community from this type of public nuisance and criminal behaviour in the future.
