Ladies to set sail for a day of racing

Published Friday 20 November 2015

Port Douglas Yacht Club is hosting a ladies day of racing this Saturday 21st November where the ladies must be at the helm at all times.

Ladies Day is an annual ‘fun’ Port Douglas Yacht Club event and any boat can join in.  It encourages the ladies to participate to give them a taste at the helm especially if they are non-yacht owners themselves.

With big plans in place for the Port Douglas Yacht Club with the upcoming self-funded kitchen refurbishment, the Club’s aim is to improve the overall experience they offer its members and patrons as well as bringing the focus back to the sport of sailing.

The Ladies Day event is another concept developed to invite ladies into the sport of sailing.

Local skipper Belinda Cooper who has had extensive experienced in racing over the past 15 years, will be setting off for a full year of sailing in 2016 for the Australasian Racing Season aboard her boat Agnes.

Agnes will be sailing in the PDYC Ladies Day event but with a different skipper.  Ms Cooper will be at the helm of a smaller boat to allow her crew to sail with another skipper.

With approximately eight to 10 boats participating, this gives a great opportunity to women who may be interested in getting involved with sailing.

To make the event even more fun, men are encouraged to dress as ladies for the day, if they want to help their crews chances of winning.

To be part of the PDYC Ladies Day Yacht Racing event a briefing will take place at the Club at 9:00am on Saturday 21st November.
