Having completed several self funded semi-major projects under the previous President Colin Simpson, the Port Douglas Yacht Club’s (PDYC) recently appointed Commodore (President) Todd Malone said the committee is ready for further Club developments.

The next major self-funded project for the PDYC is a complete refurbishment of the kitchen which has an approved budget of approximately $160,000.

The current caterers Matt and Simon Coombes have been operating the kitchen for nine years.

“They have been instrumental in the clubs’ growth.  The restaurant has a direct impact on bar trade,” said Mr Malone.

“After a nine year lease we will farewell Matt and Simon on 16th January as they move on to other commitments,” he said.

With the development of the new kitchen, due to be completed and operational by March 2016, Mr Malone advised that the Club is now accepting expressions of interest (EOI) for the running of the new kitchen.

“We’re looking for talented individuals, maybe chefs who are looking to take the next step in their career,” said Malone.

The PDYC relies on profits from the bar and restaurant, fundraising and memberships and therefore completely self funds it’s projects.

“Our last semi-major projects were the revamp of the decking and the new pontoon which cost approximately $100,000 and was completely self-fund by the Club,” said Malone.

With a brand new kitchen in the plans as well as an upgrade to the disabled ablution block, the PDYC have their sights set on improving the overall experience the club offers and bringing the focus back to the sport of sailing.

With a current membership base of 488, Malone said this is continually growing.

“We welcome new memberships from anyone interested in pursuing the sport of sailing.  Also people who are wanting to become actively involved in the club, our volunteers are an asset. All applications are approved by the Club,” said Malone.

Being the youngest Commodore to be appointed to the Club, Mr Malone said his motive was to give back to the Club.

“When I became involved in the Club I had never even sailed before.  I bought a boat and refitted it and had so many members helping me.  I had people giving me sails and offering to help maintain and fix the boat.  I just felt so welcomed,” he said.

With a vision for new projects now in place, Malone said it is about maintaining what the Club has as well as getting the balance right.

“So many members contribute in different ways, and I could see a need for a new kitchen and without commercial operators in the kitchen it will have a direct impact on the Clubs' income,” he said.

With the future of the PDYC looking very bright, Malone said it is the most financially sound the Club has ever been.

With three J24 boats now managed in their fleet, one called Mais Oui sponsored by Port FM, as well as weekend sailing programs, race regattas and WAGS on Wednesday afternoons there are many opportunities for anyone interested in the sport of sailing to learn and become actively involved.
