Excitement and anticipation was in the air last weekend when the newly re-formed Mossman Meteors Swimming Club competed at the Mareeba Spring Carnival.
This group of swimmers were the first to represent the Douglas Shire in swimming at a regional level in seven years. The focus of the day was on team spirit, having a go and putting into practice all the techniques learnt since training began in late August.
Seventeen athletes made their splash in the biggest carnival of the year, which attracted 227 competitors from 13 Far Northern Clubs. All swimmers competed exceptionally well to pick up ribbons and medals, or set their first personal best (PB) times.
Overall the club achieved eight 1st, four 2nd, and seven 3rd places in age groups from eight years and under to 14 years. Coach Ben Eagle, a former Meteor and ex National Australian Team Swimmer, said “I am impressed with the performance and effort shown by everyone who took part today.”
Since coming back on the scene, the Meteors have received overwhelming support from the FNQ swimming community. A welcoming reception was given by all the other teams at Mareeba, who expressed how pleased they were to see the once successful club return to competition.
The Mossman Meteors are calling on any young swimmers to come along and join for fun, fitness and friendship. Training sessions with Will Swim and Tri are held at QT fitness centre pool.
