Rainforest by rickshaw: World record attempt

Published Wednesday 21 October 2015

On 17th October 2015, Crystal Davis set off from Port Douglas to the Sunshine Coast taking a novel approach to her mental and physical health by traversing 1,700kms on a rickshaw.

At the same Ms Davis will be attempting to set a new world record for the longest journey by rickshaw. Currently the record for the longest journey by rickshaw is 1,377.96km. Crystal is aiming to set a new record by riding 1,695km.

Having a love of Port Douglas after visiting many times over the years with her parents, Ms Davis decided that this was the best place to kick off her solo unsupported journey.

“I have thoroughly researched the coast line and the route I’m taking.  This is my first long haul bike ride,” said Davis.
Planing to cover 50 kms per day, Davis said it is not as easy as it looks in particular if the road has no shoulder and tight turns.

A firm believer in supporting people in their darkest moments, Ms Davis is raising $10,000 for Lifeline, who provide phone counselling for Australians experiencing suicidal feelings.

After a period of ill health in 2011, and a coinciding experience with a loved one battling suicidal thoughts, Crystal has spent the past 3 years exploring what makes her happy and healthy. This ride is the next step in that journey.

“This is something I need to experience for myself, to know I can do it,” says Crystal.

“I believe nothing is more important than making empowered choices and seeing what we are capable of in the world, all with a smile!”

Newsport will keep up to date with Ms Davis’ progress of her journey, fund raising and world record attempt.
