DOUGLAS Heat Basketball Club celebrated successes at their first rep tournament of the year in Atherton at the weekend.
Players from under 12s, under 14s, under 16/18 and the club’s first men’s squad represented the Douglas region at the first round of the Top of the North 2015 series at Atherton Senior High School.
The juniors had mixed results, the under 12 boys and under 14 boys both winning two games, the under 12 girls winning one game from three, the under 16 girls putting in a stellar effort against bigger girls in their three games, and the under 16 boys improving against much more experienced opposition.
Much excitement surrounded the Douglas Heat men versus Mulgrave match, which was pitted as a good measuring stick for this year’s new Wednesday night men’s competition, where players had been selected for representative duties.
Ably led by 6 foot nine former Port Douglas Croc star ruckman, Lukas Teasdale, the Heat demolished the experienced Mulgrave side, 44-22, in an exceptional team effort.
Stand-out performances came from another former Crocs ruckman, Nathan Bourke, and the dynamic and athletic Jonny Noble, against a side that featured two Queensland state rep players who were shut down early.
