The perception in Cairns that Port Douglas is enjoying heaps of optimism and vibrancy rang true at a well-attended Chamber of Commerce Business Breakfast at The Tin Shed this morning.
Four speakers from varying sectors of the economy painted a healthy picture and an expectation of exciting times ahead.
Tony Fyfe, CEO of Hemingways Brewery, which is currently under construction, said May 16, 2016 was the targeted opening date and patrons can look forward to eight to ten different beers; the opportunity to join a Founding Members Club; and to create their own beer recipe.
“The key to our success will be engaging with the local community. We also intend to hire 30-40 staff which will include a Brewery Consultant and later on we’ll also have a Rock Star Brewer on board,” said Fyfe.
Steve Molnar, General Manager of the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort, said the current renovations to the property were well underway and they are planning a ‘soft launch’ in February next year with the official launch a few months later.
“We are making excellent progress on our new rooms as we tackle the inside, outside, the pools and landscaping. There is work to be done in the lobby and restaurant; while the tenders are out for the country club, gymnasium and pool,” said Molnar.
Rob Cruz, General Manager of the Reef Marina, was equally enthusiastic about the progress being made in his area; while Mark Matthews from Advance Cairns underlined the impact of a truly regional approach to economic development.
He added that although the tourism industry is in a healthy state and the numbers are up, he did single out the high youth unemployment and questioned where the jobs are for our youth.
