Member for Cook Billy Grodon MP launches the new hard court at Port Douglas Tennis Club last Saturday.

“The Queensland government is always keen to get behind local clubs to help improve sporting facilities, not only for their club members but for the community as a whole,” said Mr Gordon.

The court upgrade will also provide a more professional court surface to attract junior ranking tennis tournaments to the club. It is reported the club plans to increase its size in the coming years in order to provide more opportunities for locals to participate in tennis.

Getting Queenslanders outdoors, active and enjoying sport and the lifestyle available in Far North Queensland, is high on the governments agenda. “We also want great facilities that can support our next generation of tennis champions. I am sure that the next Pat Rafter is just waiting to be discovered in a local tennis club somewhere in Queensland,” said Mr Gordon.

With government supporting local sporting facilities and projects such as this encourages greater participation across communities regardless of age or physical ability.  Ensuring sport is inclusive allows the whole of community to participate. The Queensland government provided over $67,000 to support this project one of the many throughout the state aimed at delivering grass roots sporting facilities thus improving participation rates.

Mr Gordon gave a final word of thanks before the final official launch proceedings of the cutting of the ribbon, acing it on the new hard court and the revealing of the plaque.

“Well done to the Port Douglas Tennis Club you should be very proud of your efforts in procuring this great project.  Your commitment to your local club and community is outstanding and one we hope to see in sporting clubs across this great state,” said Mr Gordon.
