Daintree Saltwater Barramundi Fresh Fish Farms in Wonga Beach have added another prestigious notch to their belt after winning Gold at the Sydney Royal Summer Fine Food Show. 

Daintree Saltwater Barramundi’s prime whole barramundi scored a 91.33 and took out Champion Whole Fish and Gold in the show’s Barramundi, which stacked up 109 competitors from all over the country in a culinary contest.

The latest Gold for Daintree Saltwater Barramundi goes alongside five other golds won in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, in addition to a host of other Champion, Bronze and Silver awards.

Farm manager and board director Mark Hober said he and his staff were very pleased with the outcome. 

"It feels excellent and very well deserved," Mr Hober said. 

"We've gotten that result because the quality is there in our barra, year after year - we've got good water quality and our husbandry techinques, all the way through to pack-out, are top-notch.

"We'll be back, for sure."

The farm operates 14 earthen ponds filled with saltwater sourced from the Daintree River, growing fingerlings selected from local hatcheries.

The fish are grown to full size over 12 to 18 months in accordance with strict environmental practices.

The farm also offers up one of its ponds for recreational fishing, advertised as the “Hook-a-Barra”  business, where anglers can have a crack at hooking a barramundi or mangrove jack.
