Fractured Country to be screened at The Clink Theatre 25th Sept
September 16th 2014, Tuesday
The film, 'Fractured Country' will be screened at the Clink Theatre, Port Douglas, on the 25th September, “Meet & Greet” starting at 6.30 pm.
This film documents the somewhat confronting experiences of those who’ve been affected first hand by csg mining. Alwyn Lyall, Western Yalanji, chairperson of the Western Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation, will also be speaking, along with Paul Neal. All are warmly invited.
If you are thinking, 'what has this got to do with me?'
Well in a recent interview with Lisa McCafferty (freelance journalist) Alwyn Lyall warned, “The underground aquifers (underground water) are all connected. If we poison the river systems it will affect everyone. We need to unite as one voice regardless of geography or race.”
Prime agricultural land, wilderness areas & the Great Barrier Reef in North Queensland are at risk of destruction by unconventional coal seam gas mining or fracking as it is commonly known.
This highly controversial process of fracking involves the high pressure injection of huge volumes of water, proppants (such as sand), radioactive tracers & other toxic chemicals into wells, then detonated to shatter the earth, thus releasing trapped gas.
Once mobilised, methane gas may contaminate the aquifers & escape into the atmosphere. Methane is reportedly about 30 times more damaging a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
If you want to know more about how this is going to affect this area, this evening is not to be missed.
