Pre-inquest into Mossman Gorge death held

An inquest into the death of a Taiwanese national swept away while swimming at Mossman Gorge will be held in July.

Che-Wei Su, 28, visited the popular swimming hole while on an  Australian working holiday in February.

Mr Su was swimming with his girlfriend and two friends that afternoon before he is believed to have been caught in a rapid and swept downstream.

A swift water rescue team recovered the man's body later that evening, 500 metres from where he was last seen.

The cause of Mr Su's death is currently undetermined but consistent with drowning.

The death sparked debate as to whether some far north Queensland swimming holes should be closed during the wet season.

Mr Su died four days after FNQ Heat soccer player Patrick Ram, 18, slipped and fell to his death in a restricted area of Crystal Cascades.

A pre-inquest was held on Wednesday in Cairns.

Mossman detectives are assisting Cairns coroner Jane Bentley with the investigation.
