Port police pleased with Easter visitors
Tuesday April 22 2014, 2:51pm
Port Douglas police have praised the behaviour of visitors and locals in the region with only two arrests made over the Easter long weekend.
Sergeant Damian Meadows said tourists had flocked to the far north Queensland community following Tropical Cyclone Ita and were predominantly well-behaved.
"It was great to see people out in numbers enjoying themselves responsibly," Sgt Meadows said.
"Traditionally Port Douglas is pretty good over Easter. It's normally a family-oriented weekend up here and this year was no different."
Flipping out
Authorities arrested a 27-year old Port Douglas man on Sunday evening after allegedly setting off a fire hydrant at the Port Village Shopping Centre.
Police will allege the man later tipped over a table patrons were eating at outside a restaurant on Macrossan Street before kicking in the front passenger door of a rental car.
The man is also alleged to have damaged a telephone booth and tipped over a wheelie bin.
He was detained by members of the public until police arrived and arrested him at 8:15pm.
The man will appear in the Mossman Magistrates Court on May 14.
Police arrested a 22-year old Innisfail man on Warner Street for a public nuisance offence on Saturday morning.
The man allegedly took property out of a cyclist's backpack as he rode past and then threw the property into a garden bed before being apprehended by authorities.
Stay safe
This week police are urging motorists to stay safe on the roads after a quiet Easter.
Sgt Meadows said with ANZAC Day this Friday and the end of school holidays, motorists should be wary of changed traffic conditions and avoid speeding.
Three people died on Queensland roads over the Easter long weekend, one less than the same time last year.
