Crocs feast on Lions for Easter

Crocs feast on Lions for Easter

Sunday April 20 2014, 10:01 am

The Easter Bunny called in early at the Croc Pit on Thursday night.

Both senior and reserves Crocs teams registered excellent wins after stirring battles with their fired- up opponents, Cairns City Lions.

The Crocs boys wore black armbands in memory of past committee member, Bruce "Bomber" Brown.

The Seniors match started at 8 pm under a full Easter moon.

Fortunately no lunatics were spotted.

From the opening bounce the game proceeded in manic fashion.

Full bore sprinting, slick handballing - the footy rocketing from one end of the ground to the other.

The visiting Lions boys added a few grey hairs to Crocs coach Brad Cooper's head as they slammed on six goals to two in the first quarter.

The Lions' kicking for goal was phenomenally accurate all night.

The Crocs had two newcomers in Sam Scally and Dylan Prater in their new look squad, and 17-year old Ash Davidson playing his first Senior game.

A meteoric rise for Ash.

Juniors, reserves, seniors in 3 games - could the Brisbane Lions be next?

Ash acquitted himself brilliantly finishing with three goals.

How did the Crocs pinch the points?

They manned up, bulldozed their opponents, lifted their tempo, talked to each other and showed indomitable spirit.

It was a magnificent team effort by every player with great contributions from Kane Goodwin, Adam Boone (five goals), Ash Davidson, Daniel Cross, Declan Kelly and James Mueller.

The bullocking effort by Ben McCartney and the smooth running style of Kane Freyling stood out.

Damien Williams up forward with three goals stood strong.

Captain Dylan Wearmouth was in everything; Chris Adams was elusive.

Superfit Josh Lea was still full of run in the last quarter and Thomas Clough kept ploughing in.

The stylish Scott Roberts was right back to best form.

To their credit the Lions never faulted in their endeavour and the game was in the balance all night.

The quality of the performance by both team was worthy of a final.

As the Crocs team coalesces fully it will be a formidable combination.

The Reserves boys had the worst of the conditions with a strong gusting, swirling wind threatening to rob the match as a spectacle.

But both teams ignored it and played a genuinely pleasing open brand of football.

Crocs midfielder Peter Reid was at his dashing best early and started the momentum.

First gamer Patrick Moland was brilliant up forward grabbing big high marks, kicking goals and presenting as a broad target for his mid-fielders.

Tim Oke was impressive in the ruck in his second club game giving his small brigade an arm-chair ride.

Ethan McCullough dobbed a sneaky goal and the Crocs had winners all over the ground.

Andrew 'bucket" McLeod was providing the many spectators with a glimpse of his classy skills as Dylan Pierce and Joel Roenfeldt took on and beat their opponents.

Braden Laurin and Jack Lowe kept harassing their opponents and getting possessions.

Liam Edwards popped through a clever goal.

This was a thrilling performance by the Reserves in their second hit-out for the season.

The quality of their ball-handling, team work and manning up suggests they'll enjoy a most successful year.
