Heavy rainfall has battered parts of the Douglas Shire with a 'convergent band' settled over region.

Cape Tribulation resident, Pat Shears, said he recorded 460 millimetres at his home over a 24 hour period.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported 187 mm of rain for Low Isles.Bairds at Daintree River recorded 146 mm overnight and 234mm since 9am Tuesday.

Mr Shears said rain had eased this morning and causeways were no longer flooded over.

"I had to empty out the rain gauge overnight," he said.

"Mind you, in 1981 we recorded over 800 millimetres in a 24-hour period."

Duty forecaster, Greg Connor said the rain had been caused by conditions in neighbouring parts of the state.

"It's the convergence of moist air brought over by ex-Tropical Cyclone Gillian that is sitting in the western peninsula and southeasterly winds," he said.

"When these two systems converge under these conditions you can have very high rainfalls."

The Bureau expect conditions to ease leading into the weekend.

"The mechanism causing these hi rainfalls is gradually breaking down and as the ex-Tropical Cyclone Gillian moves westward," he said.

"By the weekend we're forecasting perhaps some showers on Saturday morning but a mostly fine weekend."

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should beware of fallen trees and powerlines and avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
