Mackay Sugar have met with community groups to discuss safety concerns over transporting cane from the Tablelands to Mossman Mill.

Representatives from Main Roads, Queensland police and the Douglas and Mareeba Shire Councils attended the meeting on Monday, along with the mill's transport supplier Qube Logistics.  

Mackay Sugar Communications Manager Lorelei van Dalen said cane transported via Mareeba, Mt Molloy, Julatten and the Rex Range would be done so safely.

"Mackay Sugar and Qube Logistics have listened to the community and invested a lot of time and money into the development of initiatives that will ensure our cane transport operations are conducted in a safe and responsible manner," she said.

Ms van Dalen said changes suggested at the meeting would be raised at community planning workshops in March.

The changes would be reflected in the company's 'Cane Transport Community Action Plan' which will be presented to the Mt Molloy and Julatten communities in April.

From early May, Tablelands cane will be transported via trucks to Cassowary Ramps (just south of Mossman) and then via train to Mossman Mill.

Mossman Mill is expected to crush approximately 1.3 million tonnes of cane this coming season.

Around 700,000 tonnes of Tablelands cane will be delivered to the mill during the crush.
