Floral Edge: Local business in bloom
Sisters Tamika Mackrell and Candace Johnson are the happy faces behind Floral Edge in Port Douglas.
Hailing from the wild, beautiful lakes and mountains of Gippsland, Victoria, Tamika and Candace have called the tropical beauty of Port Douglas home for the past few years.
Candace, the older of the two, said Floral Edge started as a dream shared between the sisters. Tamika trained as a floral apprentice, passing on her knowledge and skills to Candace before moving to Port Douglas. She loved the town so much, she persuaded Candace to relocate and join her.
Eighteen months later, Candace did just that and together, the sisters opened Floral Edge in April last year. Since then, their initial business plan, focused on offering beautiful floral gifts, has expanded.
“We are trying to offer an all-round shop where you can buy a present, flowers, or a card, and we can even gift wrap it for you,” said Candace.
Nestled between Coles and Target in Port Shopping Village, Floral Edge is a delicate rose between the corporate thorns, and an in-person visit is a feast for the senses. The aroma of fresh flowers and cornucopia of jewellery, presents and gifts on display is a visual treat, and the women are eager to stock products from small, local traders, to support local business.
Even if you are there browsing for a gift for someone, you will probably leave with one for yourself!
Floral Edge is counting down to February 14, with Valentine’s Day considered every florist’s biggest trading day of the year.
The sisters have prepared a special Valentine’s Day price list, with single roses to bunches of blooms priced for all tastes and budgets.
While Floral Edge roses usually originate from a Tablelands supplier, they're having additional supplies shipped from Melbourne in anticipation of the order boost.
Customised hampers, incorporating flowers, gourmet food, and champagne, will ensure Cupid’s arrow strikes even the most discerning Valentine. And to sweeten the deal, there’s free delivery in Port Douglas on Friday, with orders taken by phone, email or walk-in.
On February 14, Floral Edge will deliver until their flowers run out!
