Funding boost for rural firies

As NSW fire fighters battle the state's worst bushfire emergency in nearly half a century, Queensland's State Government announced a funding boost for the sunshine state's Rural Fire Service.

Member for Cook David Kempton applauded the move, announced on Friday.

Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey said the State Government will fully fund the service’s equipment, including protective clothing, communication equipment and training and ensure rural fire fighters are equipped to do the best job for Queenslanders.

“Mr Dempsey has also directed Assistant Minister for Emergency Volunteers Ted Malone to oversee actions arising from each of the Malone Review recommendations,” Mr Kempton said.

The news comes just two days after Mr Kempton met with the Premier, Mr Dempsey and Mr Malone to relay the concerns surrounding the QFRS raised to him by the Mareeba community.

“During our meeting Mr Dempsey vowed to look at all options to ensure the Rural Fire Service was not disadvantaged and that volunteers were recognised for the enormous contribution they make to rural Queensland,” he said.

“Today’s announcement proves that he listened to the concerns raised and acted on them in the best interest of rural communities.”

Following the finalisation of the Malone and Keelty Reviews, the Assistant Minister and his support team, including Cairns Peninsula Area Director of Rural Operations, Inspector Bryan Cifuentes, will work to ensure the Government prioritises the recommendations and determines how they can best be implemented.

Mr Malone said he looked forward to working with all of the brigades across Queensland to achieve a fully supported rural volunteer fire service that builds on community resilience.

Mr Kempton said the Minister had also moved to meet safety concerns by ordering red and blue flashing lights for all Rural Fire Brigade trucks and that Mr Malone would continue to liaise with Rural Fire Brigades over issues around the new Emergency Management, Fire and Rescue Levy.
