Sustainability Group wants candidates views
Douglas Shire Sustainability Group (DSSG) will be approaching Douglas Shire Council candidates for their views on sustainability.
The group, formed in 2005 to protect the environment of the Douglas Shire and promote sustainable development, will be lodging a questionnaire with the council candidates after nominations close on October 17.
Results will be presented at the upcoming public candidate forums on October 28 at the Port Douglas cyclone shelter, and October 30 at the Mossman Shire Hall on Mill St, both at 6pm.
The group similarly circulated to federal election candidates a questionnaire during the recent Federal Election.
"We feel its important for the residents and rate payers of the Douglas Shire to be made familiar of the views of potential councillors with regards to the sustainability of our tourism and agricultural industries, planning and our economic, natural, and social environments," said DSSG President, Kevin "K-Star" Eldridge.
As part of some much needed fundraising to continue their activities, engage with the community and allow current and future members a night of good positive social fun, the DSSG are the next Community Group to be offered a place at the Central Hotels Charity K-Star Trivia Nights.
Kent Fordham, Secretary of the DSSG wished to thank the following businesses: Port Douglas Catering and Events, Lure Restaurant, K-Star Walking Tours, Back Country Bliss, Daintree Discovery Centre, Sailaway, Nine & Dine, The Junction Cafe, Salon Z, Lady Douglas River Cruises, Whileaway Bookshop & Café, Whimsy Bits, Wildlife Habitat, Live Life Pharmacy, In-Port Shoes, Daintree River Cruise Centre.
"There is over $1000 of prizes available to raffle on the night" Mr Fordham said.
Elisa Ryznar, treasurer of the DSSG said "The support from the business community has been absolutely amazing - everybody has been very generous with their donations for our trivia night and recognises the important role the DSSG has played in the past and continues to play for future generations."
The Trivia Night kicks off at 7pm this Wednesday the 16th October, with doors open at 6.30. Locals are encouraged to contribute a $10 entry fee per person. The Central Hotel provides $500 and complimentary canapés, and with the added raffle, each previous local organisation to benefit has raised an average of $2000 for their cause. The night aims to be concluded around 9.30pm and everyone is welcome.
