Cairns CBD revamp begins

Construction has started on the $16 million project that will breathe new life into the Cairns CBD.

Fencing has started to be installed and site preparation works have commenced under the City Centre Alive project.

“This is an exciting event for the Cairns CBD,” Mayor Bob Manning said. “It’s been a long process, but we are finally seeing the start of this major transformation that will improve the functionality of our CBD and create a more inviting environment for people to visit, shop and do business.”

It's a positive boost for the Far North Queensland region, with work starting in Port Douglas last month on a roundabout at the intersection of the Captain Cook Highway and Port Douglas Road. Though the Douglas project is driven by the State Government, and Cairns City Centre Alive by Council, both upgrades spell good news for residents and tourists.

In Cairns, paving is being removed, providing access to utility infrastructure such as water and sewerage for relocation. Some water infrastructure upgrades are also taking place.

“The pavers will be carefully removed, cleaned and reused in another beautification project,” Cr Manning said.

“Every effort is being made to reuse equipment and materials wherever possible.

“This is the case with the electrical components of the performance stage, which has now been stripped and is ready for removal.”

The stage will be demolished this week, as engineering investigations have found that relocation of the stage itself is not feasible.

Lake Street will be closed to all vehicles from next Monday, October 21, for approximately three months (weather permitting). Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout this time. The Lake Street car park will also be closed and the taxi rank will be temporarily relocated to Shields Street near the Hides Hotel corner.

A dedicated telephone hotline and email address has been established for members of the public to ask questions or seek information during construction. Phone 1800 001 557 or email citycentrealive@cairns.qld.gov.au

Members of the public are advised that fencing has been installed for their safety. Please do not enter a fenced area.
