Tricky black ball potted for win

The Port Douglas Pool Competition Grand Finals were played at the Court House Hotel, Wharf Street on Sunday, September 15.

Barrier Reef Tavern went into the B Grade Grand Final as favourites and didn’t disappoint. Their opposition, Coco’s Bar and Grill, fought hard to stay in the game, pulling back from 2–0 early on, but Barrier Reef Tavern applied the pressure from then on and took the match 5–2.

This year's A-Grade final was played between Rattle 'n' Hum and The Port Douglas Yacht Club. Rattle 'n' Hum were badly undermanned going into the finals rounds, with two players unavailable. With only five players eligible, they needed to win consistently if they were to make up for being one singles and one doubles match down in the usual nine-game format before they even started. This actually meant that the Port Douglas Yacht Club needed to win only three games to take the title - quite an ask even for Rattle 'n' Hum.

In two tightly contested opening games, Yacht Club players Laza Woodall and Steve Hughes (with an element of luck on their side) won both games to take a 2–0 lead and really apply the pressure on the Rattle lads. However, in game three, Rattle 'n' Hum fought back, almost evening the score at 2-1 and keeping their championship hopes alive.

Yacht Club's Neil Weavers then stepped up. In the early stages of a tense game, Weavers looked like having lost his chance, with his opponent potting all his balls leaving Weavers with four reds still on the table. However, when the the Yacht Club player got his chance he cleared the remaining balls on the table, leaving himself out of position on the top cushion and needing to pot a difficult long black into the bottom left hand pocket if he was to claim the title for his team.

As the black dropped into the pocket, Weavers, his teammates and The Courthouse spectators erupted into cheers, thrilled the Port Douglas Yacht Club had reclaimed the title lost last year. Sunday's win is their second Grand Final victory from their last three straight Grand Final appearances.

Individual players of the year were Graham Haigh and Amy Stevens from the Courthouse Hotel team.
