This year’s event, running from May 12 to 17, features 12 boats - each bringing its own energy and character to the vibrant coastal celebration.

Peter Cooper, Head of the Race Week Committee at the Port Douglas Yacht Club, said boats have come from as far as Melbourne and Townsville, with four entries from Cairns. 

“It’s a great mix of people. The winds will be a bit strong early, but it should calm down by Friday,” he said.

Among the crews is Charm Offensive, a Hanse 445 sailed by James Permezel from Melbourne. 

James is a veteran sailor, having done the Sydney to Hobart, and has brought his boat north over the years, now keeping it at Magnetic Island. 

“We’ve done this regatta about six times now. It’s all about fun, bringing people together, and giving newcomers a great experience,” he said.

This year, James arrived in Port Douglas with a full crew, including Jane Wylie, who was on her very first sailing trip

“I was in tears when we got here, it was such a special journey,” she said. “We had dolphins swimming alongside us and perfect winds the whole way.”

“It’s a beautiful regatta,” James added. “We’re here to win and enjoy every minute.”
