The Douglas Dragons continued their spectacular form in the first week of the finals, clinching a spot in the grand final of the Division 1 Men's league with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Marlin Coast Rangers.

Following a disappointing defeat in last year’s grand final, the Dragons were determined to turn the tide this season. 

Ben Syrett, veteran Douglas Dragons player, emphasised the team's focus and composure leading up to the crucial match. 

“Both teams needed to go into this game with a different game plan,” he said, reflecting on the Dragons' previous losses to Marlin Coast this season. 

“The vibe was very positive; both teams knew they had the potential to win. We just had to stick to our guns and translate it on the field.”

After their semifinal triumph, the victorious Division 1 squad now enjoys a week off, eagerly awaiting the outcome of the upcoming match between Marlin Coast and Atherton, which will determine their grand final opponent.

Meanwhile, the Division 2 team fell short in a tight match against Stratford, losing 1-0 after conceding a late goal. 

Mr Syrett shared insights on the week ahead for the Division 1 players, stating, “They will have a relaxing week to rest up and nurse any little injuries, but in the meantime, we’ll do whatever we can to help prepare the Division 2 team.

In a recap of the semifinal, the game got off to a scrappy start, but the Dragons managed to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Their persistence paid off in the second half when homegrown talent Tom Burcombe scored a spectacular goal in the 60th minute, extending their lead to 2-1. Tension mounted in the final minutes when a contentious penalty was awarded to Marlin Coast. 

With the game on the line, Mr Syrett, who had transitioned into the role of goalkeeper, made a remarkable save, securing the Dragons' victory and solidifying their place in the grand final.

The Dragons now turn their attention to the highly anticipated grand final, set to take place on Friday, September 13.
