Last Saturday, the annual Xtreme Beach Hockey tournament successfully went off transforming Four Mile Beach into a sandy stick extravaganza as locals and visitors rallied for a day of fun, friendly competition, and festival feels.

Prominent supporter of the event, Mayor Scomazzon participated in her third consecutive year with a crackerjack Douglas Shire Council team championed by Councillor Abigail Noli topped with keen council representatives.

“It’s become a bit of a tradition for us since we started,” Mayor Scomazzon said. “It’s a lot of fun, and I really encourage everyone to join in future competitions because it’s a great day!”

The beach hockey event has seen significant growth since its inception, evolving from its humble beginnings into a much-anticipated activity for the community. 

“The organisation has done a fantastic job. It started off just with Four Mile Beach, and now it has expanded significantly, providing great fun for both children and adults,” she stated.

While the competition may leave participants with a “couple of days of soreness,” Mayor Scomazzon insisted that the experience is well worth it for all involved. 

An eclectic barrage of players made up the competitive sides represented in both the junior and senior tournaments, who all gritted it out enjoying their time on the iconic seaside stage.

The cooling weather and fresh early drizzle were welcomed by teams as the beach battles blazed turning up the heat and enthralling the united community.

When the sand settled, applauding stick taps saluted the triumphant sides, with The Coralitos seniors and the junior Vipers taking home the coveted coastal hardware.

In the salty afterglow, many were left licking their wounds savouring the splendour swell of a spectacular day framing inclusion, fun, and participation, saving the date for next year’s tournament.
