Socks-clad Aussie ‘Forrest Gump’ crosses Port on 1,000km run from Cairns to Cape York

Running solely on his socks, Ben Ferris, better known as Ferris Gump, arrived in Port Douglas last night, as part of his incredible journey from Cairns to Cape York. Covering a challenging 1,000 kilometres, his mission is to donate socks and promote sports in remote Australia.
Upon reaching our town after completing the first 60 kilometres of his journey, Bay Villas Resort warmly welcomed him. Following a restful night’s sleep and a rejuvenating magnesium bath, he is now recharged for the miles that lie ahead.
Addressing concerns about foot discomfort, Mr Ferris disclosed, “I mainly run on my forefoot to reduce impact”.
His journey is driven by a larger purpose: raising funds to provide his custom-designed running socks, Roo Runners, to underprivileged children in remote regions.
“Traditional running shoes are expensive, leaving many Indigenous kids without proper footwear,” he explained. Additionally, shoes wear out quickly, whereas our socks are more affordable and durable."
Moreover, the socks promote barefoot running.
“It’s becoming trendy again due to its many benefits, supported by science. Our barefoot running socks are designed with inner car tube material, which makes you have more power and agility while running, mimicking the leap or hop of a kangaroo.”
Mr Ferris explained their plan to use inner car tube material from remote communities.
“We're planning to connect with the elders, and see if they can help us by stitching the inner car tube to the socks. This will hopefully create jobs and give kids a better opportunity for sports.
"Donations, even $10, would be greatly appreciated and make a significant difference.”
Hailing from Byron Bay, Mr Ferris is no stranger to unconventional runs, having crossed Australia in various ways, including giant inflatable thongs, a stand-up paddleboard, and even barefoot running with a wheelbarrow and bar fridge across Tasmania, Cairns to Melbourne, and Townsville to Darwin.
Expressing his long-standing desire, Mr Ferris stated, “I’ve wanted to run to the tip for a very long time".
Navigating tight, winding roads presents risks, but he remains undeterred. Supported by his campaign manager, Matthew Race, who oversees logistics, Mr Ferris aims to cover 60-80 kilometres daily, reaching Cape York in approximately two and a half to three weeks.
