One of the most popular locations and viewpoints in the Douglas Shire continues to get a long overdue and much-needed refurbishment. 

Long neglected but universally adored by Douglas shire residents Pebbly beach was smashed from pillar to post during last December's Cyclone Jasper and the following heavy rainfall. 

The two, back to back events hammered a number of existing palm trees and greatly reduced parts of the bank area next to the Captain Cook Highway.

The damage forced the hand of TMR officials who this week have performed key works whch has included restoring the banks area and giving new life to damaged palm trees.

"We are currently carrying out emergency repair works on the Captain Cook Highway at Pebbly Beach," a TMR spokesperson told Newsport just moments ago.

"The works involve installing rock protection and pavement repairs to stabilise a damaged slope at the foreshore.

"For safety reasons, this section of the Captain Cook Highway has been reduced to single lane operation under coordination of traffic control and temporary traffic signals.

"The temporary repairs are expected to be carried out by the end of the week, weather and construction conditions permitting.

"We expect to reopen this section of road to two lanes once the temporary repairs are complete.

"The recovery works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

"We will continue to monitor this section of the Captain Cook Highway following additional heavy rainfall for the safety of motorists."
