Talented young Douglas athletes shine with National Championship success

The media storm surrounding cyclone Jasper early December 2023 somewhat diverted attention from the outstanding accomplishments of local athletic talents in Douglas. However, as the storm settles, it’s time to shed light on these remarkable achievements.
Tracy Butland, Treasurer at Douglas Athletics for five years and a former athlete herself, shared stories of young athletes who secured multiple prizes at championships in early December last year.
One notable achievement came from Caitlyn Butland, who secured success at the Athletics Australia All-schools National Championships in Perth which took place from December 7 to December 10.
Competing in the U15 Girls Pole Vault category, she clinched a Silver medal with an impressive 25 centimetre personal best, clearing the bar at 2.75 metres.
Ms Butland highlighted that Caitlyn's journey to the championships began with her victory at the NQ Champs, earning her a spot in the North Queensland team.
Another shining star, the club’s youngest member, Jaxon Sheppard, achieved an 8 centimetre personal best and won a bronze medal for Long Jump on day one of the Australian School Sport National Championships in Launceston, Tasmania.
On the second day, he secured a bronze medal in the shot put, adding to his accomplishments.
“Jaxon, participating as a para athlete for the first time, demonstrated exceptional talent and adaptability, learning various power rules,” Ms Butland added.
The club’s oldest member, Unity, coached by the club’s President Greg Hamilton and an exceptional talent, made the regional Australia team and is aspiring to participate in the Oceania Athletics Championships in Fiji in June 2024.
Cyclone challenges
The club recently faced flooding during the cyclone, resulting in the loss of equipment.
However, Ms Butland, the club’s President, Greg Hamilton, and a growing group of dedicated parents who joined the committee, are driving the club’s momentum.
The recent acquisition of a $90,000 community benefit grant is a game-changer for the club. This grant will facilitate the installation of a new runway, complete with a pole vault box in Mossman, enabling regular training sessions.
The grant signifies a beacon of hope for the club's future endeavours, particularly as they work towards rebuilding and expanding their facilities for their 60 members.
