Local award winners and new permanent citizens to the area have been formally acknowledged this morning during Australia Day celebrations in the Douglas Shire.

Citizenship Ceremony

The Citizenship Ceremony played a central role in the festivities, as it marked the official induction of individuals from various countries, including France, Taiwan, Italy, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.

Antoine Ballin, originally from France, expressed that obtaining his citizenship marks a fresh beginning. “Now I have a new place, Australia, where I can go whenever I want. The people are nice, and I have always been warmly received here.”

For Francesco Spedale, a new Australian citizen from Italy, receiving his citizenship is the realisation of a long-cherished dream. After 10 years in Australia, along with the investment of effort, money, and countless hours of work, this moment signifies a new life and countless opportunities. Despite facing numerous challenges and contemplating giving up multiple times, the journey has been worth it in the end. “Truly a dream come true,” Francesco emphasised.

• Citizen of the Year Award - Christine Lynch (award collected by Kevin and Ruben)

As the coordinator of the Elders Justice Group Christine's extensive contributions to community well-being, support services, and cultural connections make her a deserving recipient. 

• Junior Sports Award - Caitlyn Butland

Caitlyn has qualified at the state level for gymnastics and achieved numerous milestones in various high school sports disciplines.

• Senior Sports Award - Rod Johnson 

As President of the Rainforest and Recycling Club, Rod Johnson's dedicated leadership has propelled cycling to new heights. His initiatives, from innovative programs to the Douglas Star Mountain Bike Skills course, have fostered inclusivity and success. 

• Environmental Achievement Award - Sid Murthy (award collected by Sandy Davis)

For his role in making the Mossman Botanic Gardens' biodynamic Edible Green Garden a reality. As an advocate for healthy food and biodiversity, Sid’s efforts extend to promoting traditional knowledge, volunteering at Mossman Support Services, and supporting sustainable programs. 

• Young Citizen of the Year - Amber Yendle

For her exemplary commitment to the Wonga Beach Rural Brigade and her role as a volunteer community educator. 

• Volunteer of the Year Award - Walter Gray

For his selfless dedication to serving veterans and the community. Walter's efforts extend to organising fundraising activities, ceremonies, and supporting educational programs. 

• Arts and Culture Award - Eliza Eggins

For her exemplary commitment to the Wonga Beach Rural Brigade and her role as a volunteer community educator. 

• Senior Citizen of the Year - Wendy ‘Lu Lu’ Cowan 

For her 20 years of volunteering at the NicNac Shed and her involvement in various community-focused activities. Congratulations to Lu Lu for her enduring commitment.
