FULL STEAM AHEAD: The entire Captain Cook Highway between Port Douglas and Cairns to re-open to motorists from January 20

In a huge development officially and formally relayed to Newsport just seconds ago the State Government has confirmed the entire Captain Cook Highway between Port Douglas and Cairns is set to re-open in 10 days' time.
A QLD Roads spokesperson through a telephone conversation told Newsport a decision was made a matter of minutes ago to re-open the Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Port Douglas on Saturday, 20 January at 8am, weather and construction conditions permitting.
Originally the highway was only set to re-open between Ellis Beach and Port Douglas on the 20th but a successful drive through yesterday by officials along the highway paved the way for today's wonderful decision.
Some parts of the journey will be single lane, and controlled by traffic lights or traffic controllers.
Despite the impending opening motorists are reminded they will experience delays and to plan their journeys accordingly.
The future re-opening of the highway is a huge step in the region welcoming back tourists and revitalising the local economy.
"I'm absolutely delighted the Captain Cook Highway is set to re-open on January 20," Douglas Shire deputy mayor Lisa Scomazzon told Newsport.
"I want to pay credit to the hardworking crews that have worked around the clock to get the highway back in drivable condition. It's proved a mammoth job and we thank every single worker that has contributed to getting it back in shape."
