A spokesperson from the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation expressed frustration over the incident.

“We are frustrated and displeased that visitors to the Mossman Gorge caused deliberate damage to the Rex Creek bridge by dangerously swinging and swaying it,” the spokesperson said.

The damage has forced authorities to close the popular Rainforest Circuit Track until an engineering inspection and necessary repairs can be completed. The track is currently scheduled to reopen on 11 January 2025.

“It’s disappointing that the actions of these people have resulted in the temporary closure of the Rainforest Circuit Track, taking away the opportunity for other visitors to enjoy it over the Christmas and New Year period,” the spokesperson said.

“Our message is clear: leave footprints in our National Parks, not damaged infrastructure.”

While the Rainforest Circuit Track remains closed, visitors can still enjoy the Baral Marrjanga Track and Lower River Track, which remain open.

“We ask all visitors to please observe all signage, barriers and directions from rangers and do not enter closed areas,” the spokesperson added.
