Particularly during the Cyclone Jasper events, we witnessed the heroism of our Douglas Shire State Emergency Service (SES) professionals and volunteers. This week, during national SES Week, we take the time to honor these selfless individuals who are always prepared to rise to the occasion when our community needs them the most.

Mark Ryan, Queensland's Minister for Police and Community Safety, emphasised the importance of this week, saying, "SES Week is a chance for every Queenslander to take the time to thank the State Emergency Service for the outstanding work they do".

In the Douglas Shire, the impact of the SES is deeply felt. From responding to floods and storms to conducting rescues and searches, these volunteers are always on the front lines. But their work doesn't stop there—they're also active in community events, offering support and education at local festivals and shows.

Mark Armstrong, SES Chief Officer, said that our SES volunteers truly embody the Queensland spirit.

“They do whatever it takes to keep Queenslanders safe,” he said.

This year, SES Week also includes special recognition for those who have gone above and beyond. 

Volunteers in our region, like others across Queensland, are being honored with awards such as Regional Member of the Year and Regional Operational Response of the Year. 

These accolades highlight the extraordinary efforts of individuals and teams who make a significant difference in our community.

This week it's not just about recognising their work, it's about understanding the profound impact these volunteers have on all of us. Their dedication ensures that when emergencies arise, our community stands resilient. 

This week, take a moment to appreciate the men and women who, without hesitation, put others first.
