Ever driven past the Mossman Botanic Gardens site and wondered where things are at and when you’ll actually see some development with the project?

Well, good news. A short time ago Newsport had an extended chat with Nicky from the Gardens who went into detail about the different phases of the project, what the upcoming works will actually entail and when we can expect to see development at the site.

Besides the actual gardens, Nicky also told Newsport about an exciting little side project that’s sure to benefit the next generation keen to pursue a career in horticulture.

“Yes, aside from the overall garden project itself, we also have an exciting development, in that we’ve put together in conjunction with Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation and TAFE, a local certificate two option in horticulture that will offer two electives,” Nicky told Newsport.

“We’ll run this out of Mossman High, so essentially students will gain knowledge and training on how to become a junior or senior ranger.

“It’s exciting to have TAFE back in town and they’re very keen to work collaboratively with us.

“As part of the program students will gain knowledge by actually spending time on site here at the Gardens and by utilising Douglas Shire Council gardens to gain an understanding as to what skills are required to become a future senior or junior ranger.

“Later on, some students may even want to pursue a tertiary education with the knowledge they've gained from the electives which could lead to potential careers specialising in climate adaptation, biosecurity, GIS mapping – the world really is your oyster.”
