Higher-priced fuel adds to Douglas cost-of-living pressures

Alongside higher interest rates, bigger rent chunks from the household budget and rising grocery prices, Douglas residents are feeling yet another cost-of-living pinch – fuel prices are also up across the shire.
Newsport took a closer look at the best fuel prices to be had, including on the Petrol Spy app.
The upshot – in Douglas at least – is that there is some difference between fuel pumps in the area.
As at midday Thursday (Aug 31), the lowest price you could buy unleaded 91 for was 193.9 cents per litre at BP Mossman, and 214.9 for diesel (also the only station in Douglas at those prices).
The highest rate on the same day was seen at several stations across the shire – 199.9 per litre for unleaded and 221.9 for diesel.
The main cause of the current rise, according to officials, is the lower rate of the Aussie dollar.
At around the same time a year ago, prices in Port Douglas were as low as 169.9 per litre for unleaded, with a high point of 191.9 – and diesel was only slightly lower 12 months ago at 212.9.
But we’re not doing so badly in the far north when you compare with current fuel prices in the south.
The average in Brisbane per litre of unleaded on Thursday midday was 214.8, with a high of 229.9 cents. Diesel was at about the same price as in Douglas.
