We live in our caravan and have done for more then 10 years.

We stay in free rest areas, low budget camping grounds, showgrounds, behind hotels that allow you to camp if you buy a meal or beer - service stations do the same, and friends' lawns. 

We are self contained and don’t need power, water, toilets. We have just spent the weekend at a showground with no power or water for $15 per night for a couple.

While we were there we shopped at the supermarket, bought some fuel and a “few” bottles of wine.

We have been around Australia twice now and have found that Councils that look after low cost campers benefits the town. 

It doesn’t need to be much or cost the ratepayers any, which makes me think how come Mossman showgrounds is not used for overflow campers or low cost for these campers that are (allegedly) causing trouble ( by allegedly illegal camping?).

My guess is that camping ground owners or mangers keep the pressure on the market regulators. 

Also it’s my guess that there is a group of travellers that would never stay in a caravan park, being the cost and rules and space, so the parks aren’t missing out.
