FUEL HIKE: Overseas conflict may cause more Douglas Shire bowser pain

Douglas Shire motorists might have to prepare for further fuel price hikes in the near future due to the escalating Israel-Gaza conflict.
Petrol and prices have remained at similar prices since when Newsport last took a look in early September – but noticeably, diesel has crept up around four-five cents per litre on average.
Also, the Australian dollar has remained fairly low in the past few weeks, contributing to the ‘stable’ level of fuel prices.
But motoring and consumer watch groups say higher prices are possibly just around the corner.
Analysts say the Israel-Gaza fighting could cause a rise in the international price per barrel of oil of up to 30 per cent in coming weeks, which could mean rises for petrol and diesel reaching well above the $2.00 mark in Australia.
If the barrel price reaches US$100 and stays there for a while, that will likely mean petrol prices of at least 220c a litre in Australia.
So, we’re advised to make the most of prices now - in Douglas, the cheapest rate per litre (as at Wednesday 18 October afternoon) for unleaded was found at BP Mossman – at 193.9c.
The highest in the region on the day was 205.9c at Mount Carbine.
Diesel was lowest – again – at BP Mossman, for 217.9c per litre, while at most servos in the Shire, 221.9 was the most common price.
At seven of the stations in Douglas, the unleaded price could be found at 197.9c.
