Beloved Port Douglas gift shop ‘With Sugar’ reached a remarkable milestone just days ago after celebrating its 10th anniversary. This achievement not only speaks to the enduring success of a locally owned retail gem but also highlights the heartwarming sense of community in our town.

The anniversary celebration at the shop drew a significant number of local business owners and managers who came out to demonstrate their support.

“I wish I had the words to say how I feel,” owner Alison Kleyngeld said.

“We have been so touched by the kindness and love shown to us all this week.”

A local favourite

A decade ago, ‘With Sugar’ found its roots when Ms Kleyngeld and her husband Matt took an extended break from their Tasmanian store to explore the charms of Port Douglas.

During their visit, they stumbled upon a vacant store and decided to turn their dream into a reality, a decision they've never regretted.

“We needed a change and somewhere warmer,” Ms Kleyngeld said.

“The breezy feel of Macrossan Street, leading down to Four Mile - this was our place! and we still feel exactly the same today.”

Loved by many locals, the shop continues to deliver a great selection of homewares and gift items.

The store’s ever-evolving stock and exquisite gift wrapping services have been a consistent favourite among patrons.

Navigating challenges and celebrating success

Over the past ten years, 'With Sugar' has navigated the unique challenges and joys of being a privately owned retail business in Port Douglas.

The store has experienced consistent seasons, with some unexpected surprises like the unpredictable twists brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, 'With Sugar' has thrived, thanks in large part to the tight-knit team that keeps the shop running smoothly.

“So cliche, but it takes a village,” Ms Kleyngeld said.

“Anyone who comes in would know it's a 100 percent a team effort. I work with my best friends and I'm thankful everyday for them. We know our strengths and weaknesses, and we just seem to complement each other.

“In my opinion, Port Douglas boasts one of the best hubs of independent stores. In a world of online and chain stores, customers are really noticing the difference here. Even Cairns locals are making day trips for the shopping experience, which is fantastic.

“It really is the best community to have a business. If a store doesn’t have something a customer is looking for, we’ll happily send them onto someone who might.  That support is gold.”
