TMR moves to clarify status of confusing Port Douglas Road crossing
CLARIFICATION
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has quickly moved to quash any confusion about who has right of way at a much talked about crossing location near the entrance to Port Douglas.
TMR has again reminded pedestrians and motorists the crossing in question, is well, not a proper pedestrian crossing and as such motorists at this specific location have the right of way.
“Pedestrians regularly cross Port Douglas Road near the Ulysses Avenue – Agincourt Street roundabout,” a TMR spokesperson told Newsport.
“Warning signage is in place to make motorists aware of the possibility of (encountering) pedestrians crossing at this location.
“However, pedestrians crossing the road at this location should give way to traffic.
“This location is not suitable for a formal (zebra) pedestrian crossing where pedestrians have right of way.
“Due to the road configuration (close to roundabout) it would be unsafe to stop traffic here to let pedestrians cross.
“In 2020, flashing warning lights were added to existing warning signs to increase driver awareness.”
The need for TMR clarification was sparked after questions were raised online as to the formal and proper status of that specific crossing.
"It's not a pedestrian crossing, or is it?," a poster enquired.
"Dunno (sic) am asking myself the same question... it has signs and flashing lights.. I know I always pull up when I'm driving."
Other locals were confident they already knew the status of the crossing.
"Not a pedestrian crossing and by stopping people you run the risk of queued traffic blocking the roundabout," a local explained.
"It also gives the kids the expectation that traffic will always stop for them here and they may become complacent."
