New facility to enhance Douglas Shire's reputation as leading movie making destination

The Douglas Shire is set to further enhance itself as one of the most sought after and attractive movie shooting locations in the country with construction now underway of a new complex in the Far North that will have major appeal for interstate and international productions.
When completed the $12.6M Portsmith, Cairns movie making facility will house production offices, editing suites, sound recording studio, construction and wardrobe facilities – all key aspects in luring more films to be made in the Far North, including the Douglas Shire.
Our beautiful Shire has built a renowned reputation over the years as a filming hotspot and that is set to continue with this new facility being so close to home.
“Tropical North Queensland, including the Douglas Shire is renowned for stunning beaches, rainforest locations and skilled workers, which is very appealing to production companies and has driven interest in the region as a screen production and tourism destination,” Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told Newsport.
“Recent productions in the Far North include U.S. feature film Wizards!, U.S TV series Irreverent and homegrown series Strait to the Plate and Dive Club.
“But we want even more productions to be filmed in Cairns and the Port Douglas area and that is why we are investing $12.6 million on a new film studio at Portsmith.
“This will not only create 35 jobs during construction but provide a fantastic new facility that will support an ongoing pipeline of projects and local jobs right through the supply chain to grow the industry.”
