Four mile beach mobility, wheelchair access called into question

Douglas Shire Council has reaffirmed that it continues to support those in our region with mobility issues seeking authentic, safe and memorable experiences at iconic Four Mile beach.
In recent days a number of Newsport readers brought into question whether there is currently appropriate, suitable and direct access for those in wheelchairs to access and enjoy the beach, particularly in the year of accessible tourism in Queensland.
“In 2018, Council built an all-access ramp near the lifeguard hut at Four Mile Beach for people with mobility issues,” Douglas Shire mayor Michael Kerr told Newsport.
“A 10-metre-long, all-access mat is attached to the ramp to provide extra stability on the sand for users.
“Council also has a free beach wheelchair which can be hired from the lifeguard hut. This is currently under repair.”
Council confirmed a regular staple to assist those with mobility issues at the beach is close to a timely return.
“During the wet season, the all-access mat is occasionally removed to protect it from washouts and high tides,” Mayor Kerr said.
“Contractors will be reinstating the mat this week and will remove it again when excessive high tides return later this month.”
Council said it takes the community’s safe accessibility to Four Mile beach and its surrounds seriously.
“Council is firmly committed to supporting the needs of residents and visitors with mobility issues,” Mayor Kerr said.
“Council has a pipeline of projects that will benefit and improve accessibility along the Esplanade in Port Douglas, including new shelters and beach access.
“Douglas Shire has so many picturesque locations and it is crucial we enable all people to live and breathe these unique experiences.”
