Former Councillor joins calls for roundabout beautification, more prominent signage

A former Douglas Shire Councillor has explained some little-known nuisances about a key local roundabout on the corner of Port Douglas Road and the Captain Cook Highway ahead of calls for it and prominent welcome signage to be installed in that area.
The much-needed upgrades to the highly trafficked entry point would provide a better representation and visual welcome that’s fitting for a world class international travel destination like Port Douglas.
“When the roundabout was constructed, the foundation and sub-surface construction was put in for another exit on the western side of the roundabout,” a former serving Douglas Shire Councillor, Bruce Clarke, explained to Newsport.
“This was done to allow for future development to the west, which will go ahead some day.
“Because of this, the western side of the roundabout can't be disturbed , but there is a great deal of room to allow for a statement entryway to Port Douglas just to the south of the roundabout exits.
“I say to the south, as that is where the majority of tourist traffic comes from.
“It could be done in such a way as to be also seen coming into the roundabout from the north.”
Newsport’s story about growing calls to upgrade the roundabout and for improved signage to be erected garnered a lot of reaction from local Shire residents.
Our snap poll about the issue conducted over three days last week returned an impressive 206 votes, with 82% in favour of improvement works to the roundabout and surrounds and 18% against the idea.
