Douglas united kicks off the season

The Douglas United Dragons kicked off their season in pure style, showing their hard work over the summer break has well and truly paid off.
The Dragons Division 1 men’s side played an eventful season opener against Edge Hill United at the Port Douglas Sports Complex.
Edge Hill United scored the first goal within the first ten minutes but not before the Dragons pushed back to even the score.
The Dragons refreshed after the half time break came onto the field with one thing in mind and scored two more goals making them victorious in their first game of the season.
Thrilling goals were scored by Gonzalo Becerra, Paul McAvoy and Francisco Alfonso with 3-1 being the final score.
Stand out players were the Dragon’s defenders who really gave the opposition’s strikers a run for their money.
The Dragon’s Division 2 side weren’t so lucky, losing out 2-1 against Edge Hill with a penalty shot putting the nail in the coffin in the last ten minutes.
The Douglas Dragon’s senior women’s team travelled to Marlin Coast for their opening game.
The Rangers got a point on the scoreboard late in the second half but not without a fierce performance from the Drangon’s.
Tui Clark had the opportunity to level the score with a free kick but hit the crossbar.
Douglas United Football Club Treasurer Andrew Robinson said the women’s team put on an outstanding performance.
“Some outstanding saves from goalkeeper Kaijah O’Sullivan and excellent solo runs down the wing from Jaymi Burcombe.”
The women’s eventually lost with the final score being one nil.
The Douglas Dragons women’s side are set to take on the Leichhardt Lions at home tonight, while the men’s teams will play the lion away.
