VIDEO: Humpback whales sightings captivate passengers and crew near Low Isles
BREATHTAKING ENCOUNTER
A breathtaking sight met the crew and passengers aboard Exceed Sportfishing last week as they spotted a humpback whale mother and her playful calf just off Low Isles.
The remarkable sighting marks the first encounter this year as the humpback whales grace the coast of Port Douglas during their annual migration to the warm tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef.
Jake Wyatt, captain and owner of Exceed Sportfishing, enthusiastically told Newsport that the whales were doing plenty of jumps and breeches while cruising towards Snapper Island direction.
"Our charter was underway when, suddenly, I spotted a blowhole in the corner of my eye,” he explained.
“We decided to get a little bit closer and they popped up from a fair distance. We just sat there and drifted while watching them for about five to ten minutes.
“The customers on board were from Melbourne and they were pretty stoked. It was their first time seeing humpback whales up here and they were celebrating a birthday, which made the whole experience even more perfect.”
Once the charter concluded and the customers disembarked, Mr Wyatt wasted no time.
“I picked up my partner Sherie and we ran back out there to see if we could find them. Luckily they were still in the same area so we had some lunch and watched them from a safe distance with no one else around.”
