Raise a glass to Hughie's: Mossman's premier venue for functions and memorable gatherings
BUSINESS FEATURE

In the heart of Mossman, a remarkable wine and tapas bar has been making waves since its grand opening in October last year. Hughie's, situated on the bustling main street, has quickly become a cherished gathering spot and a top choice for hosting functions and celebrations.
Susie and Paul McMahon, the dynamic duo and proud owners of Hughie's, are overjoyed by the overwhelming response from the local community.
“Both the regular Friday nights and several wonderful functions hosted upon request have been very successful,” Ms McMahon said.
“Our very first event was a wedding which was such a beautiful, happy occasion, so that’s probably one of the highlights.”
The joy and beauty of that occasion set the stage for countless unforgettable moments to follow.
“Since then we have also hosted a function for KIND, a highly successful event with over ninety attendees,” Ms McMahon continued.
“Moreover, our ability to deliver a sit-down lunch for seventy esteemed hoteliers was nothing short of impressive.”
Endless possibilities
At Hughie's, the possibilities are truly boundless, as their dedicated team can expertly cater to any type of function or event.
“Whether it’s a wedding, fundraisers, meetings, long lunches or a Christmas party, we can cater functions for up to hundred people any day of the week, except Fridays, we keep those free for our locals.”
When it comes to food catering, the talented Jed Sneddon, known for his culinary mastery at Magic Mouthfuls, has curated an expansive and diverse menu that caters to every palate and occasion.
“Whether it's a buffet, canapés, or a multi-course feast, Jed can effortlessly adapt his creations to suit any specific requirements,” Ms McMahon said.
“It is truly awe-inspiring to witness the culinary wizardry that Jed produces from our modest kitchen.
“To complete the experience, we can tailor the drink selection, offering a range of carefully curated beverages and wines to perfectly complement the chosen menu.
“Our venues allow guests to have the option to mingle in the inviting courtyard for pre-dinner drinks, savour the air-conditioned comfort of the interior, or take advantage of the delightful balmy evenings by dining outside.”
A dynamic family business
Susie and Paul, not only make a formidable couple running the business but also benefit from the invaluable support and enthusiasm of their sons, who have become an integral part of Hughie’s.
“Paul and I work well as a couple and our sons also have been incredibly supportive and are a joy to work with,” Ms McMahon said.
“They love working with Steve Gill who is an amazing source of information on cocktails, spirits and mixing drinks and Paul has the wine knowledge.
“Not only do they work behind the bar, but George also helped build the bar. He’s an apprentice carpenter with Chris Jenkin who transformed the building.
“And Darcy, an apprentice electrician, finds himself on many jobs at the Hotel. They have been very close to the project from the very beginning.”
As the family looks toward the future, their vision extends beyond the present success.
They aspire to introduce Sunday lunches accompanied by live music, creating an inviting atmosphere where guests can savour delectable cuisine while enjoying the vibrant tunes of talented bands.
