Since our inception in 2007 we’ve covered and reported on our fair share of cyclones, fires, floods and just about everything in-between across the Douglas Shire.

From community stories, to sport, we’ve brought all the information to you, right here, on the Newsport website.

During that time many of our readers have liked, shared and discussed our stories on social media, particularly on our Newsport Facebook page.

So it was recently that a story we posted to our Facebook page about a local schoolgirl achieving wonderful things at school might have received the most ‘likes’ we’ve come across on our page for a long time.

Since its publication on June 8 the story about Mossman State High School student Keani Ireson gaining a $20,000 Harding Miller Education Foundation Scholarship to help continue her studies has gone viral.

At the time of publication the story had amassed 566 likes, a pretty awesome result which highlights and reinforces our readers’ views that residents in the Shire love reading about locals achieving great things in their community.

In addition, the story has also received 34,926 Facebook post impressions, and 33, 749 post reach on Facebook.

Well done Keani!
